China’s Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) is, by some estimates, one of the largest infrastructure and investment projects in history, covering more than 70 countries, 65 per cent of the world’s population and one-third of the world’s GDP (source: EBRD). Over 150 countries and organisations have signed agreements with the People’s Republic of China on the joint implementation of the Belt & Road Initiative to date.
Investments thus far have largely involved infrastructure connectivity, energy & mining, transport & telecommunications networks and real estate. Whilst potentially high value, projects that span countries with widely varied legal, regulatory and political environments are prone to risk. Knowing how to navigate the cross-border structures that allow a positive return on investment is vital.
